Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
