Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
