Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
