Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
