Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630m (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
